My TV has lost the will to live.

I turn it on and it works for a couple seconds, but then it just shuts off.

circa 2004 Samsung 27" CRT HDTV with DVI input. I know it's not worth taking anywhere to even get looked at but it would be cool if I could fix it myself. Any ideas on what to look for?

I fixed my other HDTV (LCD) a while back, but there are much better resources for instruction and parts for that than an old style CRT.

I usually pull the back, keep FAR away from high voltage bits and capacitors (or crowbar the power system after it's unplugged), and look for blown fuses and burn spots on the PC boards. A fast shutoff implies something wonky with the power section.. probably a capacitor that's leaking or blown.

Once you find the offending component (because it's leaking electrolyte, looks burned, etc..) then you're in the 'find a replacement part' zone, and also desolder / remove / replace / solder. Which gets real tricky.

I often wish we could still just take the bagful of tubes to the drug store and test them until we find the busted one, then go back and plug 'em all back into the chassis.

But then I recognize that we'd have to deal with static, vertical hold issue, and the dreaded Rabbit ear antennae.

The last time I replaced a tube in a tube color TV it was $53.00.
With 21 inch solid state color TVs falling under $400.00 at the time I really couldn't justify buying tubes any more.


That does sound like a power supply failing a self-test. But the fail could be a board, too.
Caps or anything obvious ( caps aren't always visibly shot) , unplug boards, although no load can induce a fail, too.

It's clearly been suffering from the horrible decline in the quality of TV programming, and has become suicidal.

Can't you display some reruns, from the golden years of television, to try to cheer it up?

....Samsung had issues with bad capacitors.....not sure if this is your problem.....but it was a big problem for them.....google it and see if the symptoms fit.....also Samsung may be able to fix it for free or if you know how to solder......you maybe able to do it yourself.....
