48" of snow in Deadwood, SD

That's almost as much as we get all winter.

"Wind gusts up to 70 mph accompanied the heavy snow in western South Dakota."

Here's a very good slideshow of the snow.

If you've ever been to Deadwood, SD that really makes one wonder how anyone can get out. Thanks Grateful11 for the link. I've been there many times and often wondered how anyone gets out of there in the winter. Looks like it might be awhile....wow it looks like the upper part of the Rocky Mountain National Park in May.

I used to make two or three trips a week near Deadwood on I-90 and occasionally into town. South Dakota doesn't have the greatest snow removal but in the Black Hills they do use heavy duty equipment (front end loaders and road patrols working together can clear a lot of deep snow quickly). This time of year all the snow will be gone in a few days. Even in the middle of winter big snows seldom stay long on the roads because they get some nice warm days.

Once in January I left Minneapolis where it was -14. I got to Rapid City and it was in the mid 60s. I got back to Minneapolis and it was -14 again. All in less than 24 hours. The most extreme temperature change in the world was in Spearfish, SD which is close to Deadwood.
