Can I boot a Mavericks mini from a Tiger backup bootable HD?

I can't use the data from applications like Appleworks, because they will not run on the mini. I tried.

Pages will open AppleWorks documents.

You need to migrate the stuff you may need in the future NOW instead of moving it to old machines that will soon die anyway.

I use to use entourage, but switched to mail back at the beginning of 10.5 or 10.6. You can export that stuff and import into mail then dump the old entourage database.

And do whatever it takes to rescue those appleworks docs now while you still can.

If you have Parallels, you can create a virtual image of Leopard or Snow Leopard to run your old files. Check out this thread: http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,1671240 and follow the link at the bottom to macrumors which has DETAILED instructions on getting it to work. The author highly suggests purchasing SL server from Apple ($19.99), and Parallels actually lists it as one of the suggested OSes to load and makes it very easy to install. Otherwise, you can go through the more convoluted steps mentioned in the links above to get regular Leopard or Snow Leopard to run. I have regular SL running as a VM to run a few older programs now, and it works fine.

Thanks all.
I think I will be converting the AW docs that I need, exporting the Entourage messages, and everything else is just pics, music, PDFs, and a couple of videos.

Nothing is critical, I just want to have a little more time to get it moved.

Hello,
you can find the various options to open AppleWorks files in http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.c...page2.html , i.e. for text documents :
  • the best option is to use iWork 09 ( if you can find this version ),
  • LibreOffice 4.2 or 4.3 may also be able to convert some ...

Basically, you can't boot into a Mac with an OS older than what the Mac shipped with.

I would amend that to say "older than what the Mac originally shipped with".

Some 2010 and 2011 models, perhaps refurbs in particular, shipped with Lion or possibly later but can run Snow Leopard.

My 2010 Mac Pro, which shipped with 10.6.4 install disks, can be booted from the retail Snow Leopard disks (10.6 and 10.6.3).

there were Intel Tiger builds and PPC Tiger builds.

you didn't say if your "old iMac" was a G3, a G4, a G5, or Intel.

even the mid-2007 aluminums shipped with 10.4.10

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/im...specs.html

however; a "new" Mini would be unlikely to boot from 10.4.11, 10.5.8 or 10.6.8. there is a slight chance that 10.6.8 would boot it.

My iMac was the first of the Intel 17" flat screens.

I looked at the old AW docs, and I don't think I really need any if them, as they are pretty old.

I have a white MacBook that still has AW on it, so I could copy them over, if I really needed to.

I copied most of the user folder stuff over and loaded the music into iTunes, so I should be good.

I pulled all the photos off into a temp folder, so I will have them handy, but when I will ever get them organized is anyone's guess.

I have not decided what software I want to use fir photo management, since iPhoto doesn't seem to be free any longer, and I don't like it enough to pay for it. Smile
