Or, they could have at least acknowledged that many Apple IDs have more than one device linked to them, which quickly eats up space. $12/yr isn't a lot, but is still behind the competition.

Most everybody is not in a service area, but if you are able to get Google Fiber, they give you a free 1TB Google Drive account with your service - even if you have to wait for a year to get the actual service, once you (pre-) signup they raise your storage limit near immediately.
