Anyone use Tapatalk?
#1
I'm generallhy loathe to install software, or register with yet another entity if I don't have to.

But some of the forums I visit push the Tapatalk app.

In the past, it was a paid app, and easily dismissed, but I guess now that it's "free(?)," it might be worth another look.

But the screen shots don't reveal much, and the first thing the user is presented with is a login/register screen, which to me is usually summary grounds for immediate deletion.

Is it worth the hassle? What does the app do that the mobile versions of sites don't? Presumably, other than collect ad revenue and data mine?

If you aren't getting the feeling that you're missing something, why worry about it - why bother? Perhaps it's just advertising that you are seeing.

I generally agree.

Only trying to determine whether it really offers anything beneficial that would justify the effort to register.

If everyone here started talking about something that was only accessible via an app, I might consider it - since they aren't - I don't care. It sounds like an app that will search out forums that you might be interested in. I can't see how that would be helpful for the forum you're currently participating in.

I believe it is a forum reader app. Lot of forums/sites prompt if you want to use Tapatalk before continuing to the mobile site. I don't use it either, but I have considered it.

Yup, a forum reader.

It would be nice if Phorum has a mobile version. Trying to read this forum in portrait mode on an iPhone is trying.

That's why browsers should offer text reflow. Does Safari in iOS 7 offer reflow. I know it's missing from iOS 6. The reason I use Opera or Dolohin on Android is precisely for text reflow. For some reason other browsers don't consider it a big deal. Too bad really.

Ok, I've had some more time to sit down and play with it.

Like lots of things today, there actually is an option to skip the registration process and start using, but it's hiding in plain sight in the fine print.

It then takes you to a page where it queries your interests to build a list of suggested forums. Check off the ones that you want then the fun begins.

There are feed-style panes that draw from your list, or a sidebar style forum interface similar to the mail app on the ipad. It seems ok, but probably not appreciably better if you're already used to the typical vB or other forum in a browser. Perhaps it's much more appealing on a smaller device like an iPhone that can't comfortably display a full browser page, but on an iPad, I think it's a wash.
