Today I received a telephone call from my father. The call rang on my iPhone, my iPad, and my laptop all at the same time.I answered the call on my laptop and we spoke for a few minutes and then I switched to the call to my iPhone. Very very cool.I assume this works via Wi-Fi. What happens when I am away from home? Will it auto magically work via Bluetooth or does it just stopped working?

It's leveraging Face Time and wifi (audio and/or video). You can also make calls from your laptop through your phone as long as both are on the same WiFi network - so when away from home, yes and no, depending on where you are related to wifi networks.

I tried turning off my home WIFI, called myself, and only my phone rang. So it must not use Bluetooth. At least not automagically.

It also works in conjunction with Bluetooth LE. You have to be in certain proximity, it just doesn't work if devices are on the same wireless network.
For example, if you are on a large wireless network, say at a School or a Business, and your computer (or other iOS devices) is in an office or room on the other side of the building or campus, than where you physically are, if your phone rings in your pocket, your computer/devices won't also ring because it knows you are not close by.

Do you also have one at the office?
Cool.

Oops, fixed that so I can stay married. Very interesting about the bluetooth. Hopefully it will prove to be reliable as I can really see this being useful.

It's very dependable, even through the beta versions. I've used it many times with my MBP and iPad. It is very nice being on the computer and just taking the call without having to reach for the phone, etc.
Love this ability, but yes if you have several devices, and all enabled for this, it is like hour chimes going off in a clock shop.

It's getting better tho. When I'm in messages on my Mac, I usually have an iPhone and iPad nearby. But if I'm using the mac, I don't get notifications that ding on the mobile devices. But once I switch finder to a different program on the Mac, I do.

I noticed that with Mavericks / iOS7. I'd first see the msg notification on the Mac and if I responded to it the phone wouldn't acknowledge the msg. If I waited too long or like you say, Messages wasn't the upfront app, the phone would notify normally.
