Apple's "free Beats Solo 2 Headphones" back to school promo is now available via the Apple Store online (through September 18th) but there's a trick - you don't add the headphones to your cart along with your Mac purchase.
"After you place your order, within the next 24 hours you're going to get an email asking you to pick the headphones and color your want!"
As others have said, I wish they'd just discount a Mac by $200 but free is free I suppose and I plan to sell the headphones anyway to reduce the overall cost of a new MacBook Air that I'll order tomorrow to take advantage of the sales tax holiday.
Hmmm...wonder what the most popular color is

Apple launched its 2015 Back to School deal today, offering those who purchase a new Mac, under education pricing, a free pair of Beats Solo 2 on-ear headphones. Users will also be able to upgrade to a pair of wireless Beats Solo 2 headphones for $100.
The education deal is open to qualifying students, parents of students, faculty and staff that purchase a Mac between now and September 18. Eligible Macs include including the iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Pro. No dice for refurbished Macs or the Mac Mini. For any other inquiries check out Apple’s terms and conditions.
The Solo 2 headphones, which normally cost $199.95, are available in glossy black, white, red, blue, grey and pink. Apple is offering consumers the chance to upgrade (for $100) to the Beats Solo 2 wireless headphones, which are set to perfectly match Apple’s new line of MacBooks coming in space grey, silver and gold tones.
After years of excitement for the free iPods coming from this promotion, this deal has turned somewhat lackluster in the last couple years with Apple just offering $100 gift cards to its App Store. Perhaps by shifting back to offering a consumer product with the promotion, Apple can heighten excitement amongst customers while also bringing its Beats headphone line some more respect.
