Mac mini in a G4 iMac case?
#1
My wife's G4 iMac is an 800Mhz W 1 Gb RAM. It stumbles a bit on watching videos. It does OK with DVDs. Would it be possible to gut a Mac Mini and stuff it inside a G4 iMac? I love the form factor on the G4, but it is getting a bit old.

I think that it would be possible space wise, but driving the monitor might be tricky.
If the guy that makes portable everything out of game consoles can make Xboxes into handhelds, it certainly could be done, but at what cost?
I am in the same boat, my G4 iMac is showing its age as well, starting to stumble a bit.

Hey,that was my idea first! Well, a slightly different version.

Guess you could try the Xlr8/Daystar G4 CPU upgrades available for the iMac G4. 1.3GHz or 1.9GHz are the choices IIRC. Too bad they won't upgrade the GPU or anything else on that machine...

Well the mini is SQUARE and the G4 iMac is ROUND, so wouldn't that be like trying to put a square peg in a round hole? ;-)

If anyone could do it, this guy could.
He is incredibly talented: http://benheck.com/
If you really wanted to do it, I would contact him.

After looking at the Mini earlier tonight, and staring at my iLamp in front of me, there should be plenty of room.
Cooling would be my only concern, you might have to upgrade the fan to allow for the intel chip.

I always thought when you buy an iMac, instead of a tower, you've already confronted the fact and made the choice of buying a non-upgradable machine. G4 Towers are great for customizing, but seriously upgrading an iMac (except perhaps cosmetically, adding RAM, or plugging in an external drive) is something a buyer forfeits willingly at the moment of purchase.

Of course, doing it just as a freak hobbyist challenge is another matter. I've been crazy enough to dump a bunch of time into unadvisable projects like that, so I understand the impulse. But suggest you might change your mind after you've slept on the idea a few nights, and come to your sensesSmile

Don't know if it's possible, but, how about just trying to find a way to run a connector from the iLamp monitor to an external Mini?
I'm assuming maybe someone once figured out a way to run the 20" screen from their laptop...
