Some turtles have a notch in the shell above the tail if it is a male and this snapper turtle had no notch, so I'm guessing female. Shell was 18 inches long. Took it almost 4 hours to make it across my yard. Move about 5 to 10 feet, rest for 10 minutes or so. Headed to the lake across the street. The lake dried up dry as a bone last year and all the turtles left. Two weeks ago it was painted turtles crossing the street stopping traffic (except for those that got squeeshed) headed back. Today it was this snapping turtle.

Cool. My partner and love turtles and torties. We even got to watch 2 Galapagos torties doing it at the San Diego Zoo. crazy noises!

Could be looking for a place to lay her eggs. They travel quite a distance from their pond to do so.

That would be my guess as well. We get them about that size crawling out of the swamp to lay eggs in the sandy patches by the barns.
Good job with the rescue, billb! I hate to see them get smushed.
