We have one of those class action front load Whirlpool ones where mold grows on the rubber seal faster than paycheck.
We leave the door open. It does help.
I have replaced the seal, it was about $75 and a couple hours on a saturday.
About once a month I run a cycle of bleach and then a cycle of Simple Green Pro 5

I use this stuff for my kid's hockey gear. It is strong stuff, hospital/industrial grade.
Then a run a couple of extra cycles of just water to make sure all is cleaned out.
I think it helps.

Run it with a quart of white vinegar, AND bleach!
REALLY bad advice:

Pffft... pansies are worried about a little chlorine gas... I cough in their general direction!

The Wife insisted we get a front loader, and it was nothing but trouble. I blame the parts that fell off on Whirlpool, but the mildew was common to all models.
Fortunately, she agreed to a high-efficiency top loader when the warranty expired a month before the last breakdown.
Still, with all the recommendations to run 3-4 extra loads a month, I'm not sure where the water and energy savings are coming from.

Bleach is the most effective mold/mildew killer--that isn't toxic in concentrations normally used in the household.
