Mid 2012 MBP. Yes, it was the hard drive cable.

I added some very thin silicon self-fusing strips on either side of the new ribbon cable, to isolate it from both the HD and the top case (for insurance, as recommended).

If you look up "self fusing tape" online it looks like electrical tape. But it has no stickum. It just sticks to itself. Bought mine in the battery cable section at Tractor Supply.

Repairing a MBP via Tractor Supply... Next time try taking your tractor to the Genius Bar and see if you get a similar response (I'll bet they will try to sell you a dongle))

I needed to replace one a few weeks ago, OWC sells them although I can't find a way to navigate to this page from their home page.

Putting all of the bends into the new cable and disconnecting and reconnecting the sleep light are the hardest parts.
