Help! Trying to program xfinity remote for mom
#1
Visiting my mom from overseas, trying to make her life a bit easier. She has cable TV, xfininty. I've successfully programmed a very easy to operate remote control (only 6 buttons) for power, volume, and channel.

She seems to have hundreds of channels available. However, really only has about 6 to 10 that she cares about. Is there any way to program to cable box to only go to those favorite channels when she pushes the channel up or down button? Her fingers aren't nimble enough to punch in channel numbers on the xfinity remote.

I've been able to select her favorite channels via the cable menu, but don't know how to make those the only channels available when clicks channel up or down.

Hope that makes sense. Thanks.

I figured it out! Will put the idea here in case someone is dealing with this.

The xfinity remote has a very small "FAV" button. When that is pushed, the channel changes up to the next Favorite. I was able to program the Channel up and down buttons on her new very simple remote to mimic that FAV button. Seems to be working.

I don't think it can be done (at least with our 2 week old new whizz bang remote). You can select your favorite channels in the live program guide when logged in to Comcast's on-line website, but there is no way that I know of to limit your on-screen program guide to just your favorites with Comcast's box.

Now with a Roku box, you certainly can; and I do.

It's Comcastic! (or it that Comcrapstic?)

Where is this "fav" button of which you speak?
We don't have it.

It's a silver remote with red OK/Select button in middle. (That's how they designate the remotes on the xfinity site.) FAV button is to the left of Channel down, to the right of Mute.

That button doesn't exist on our new dark grey remote.
Glad your mom's does.

It depends on which box she has feeding the TV. My Xfinity box is at least 4 years old. It allows multiple selections in the channel guide and up/down tuning:
- All Channels
- Free to Me (everything free in my 200+ channel package)
- HD only
- Favorites (select channel in guide, hit favorite button)
- Trending
- Movies
- Sports
- Kids Shows

I have it set for Favorites with about 55 channels selected. It's mostly HD with a few select SD channels like PBS.3, Comet TV, El Ray, MHz Network (sponsored by local community college).

ScumCrap allows up to 4 other devices on the local network to access the TV channels downstream of the cable modem. Typically allowed devices:
- Apple TV, Chromecast, Bez-azon Fire TV, TiVo BOLT, Roku
- Samsung Android based TV (DVD player, Blu-Ray player, 4K player)
- Xfinity mobile streaming app on iOS/Android
- Flash capable browser on Laptop/desktop

A Cablecard capable tuner/DVR like SiliconDust HD HomeRun Prime could replace the cable tuner box, but it won't get support from ScumCrap techs.

The new Comcast remote doesn't really need a Fav button. Hold the mic button and tell the remote what channel you want.

I really wish that Comcast would let you edit the channel line-up. There's a ton of crap stations that we never watch. I would be nice to hide them in the channel guide to speed up searching.

At my mom's other place, she had a remote that had the mic button. Problem was, it was located in the middle of a bunch of other buttons and rather small, so there was no way that she could find the button and hold it down without pushing other buttons along the way, causing all sorts of chaos with the cable box.
