Time machine, as in Jules Verne or BTTF, not Time Machine, as in Apple's; go back to mid-1990's...

Feel free to pick your own date and time.

Time Machine is H G Wells - not Jules Verne
The older Verne was Wells' muse/inspiration in a myriad of ways, plus he's name-checked in the 1960, The Time Machine movie. The little "m" in the OP was meant to reflect the SF'y concept vs. Apple or Wells' capital "M" as a titled entity. If only the Chunnel had been around back in their time period, they coulda hung out together.

Snagging and using your own domain certainly is the most efficient way of maintaining long term control over all things ethernety email-wise. Going back to the pre-wifi, post AppleTalk era seemed like the next best option, but it's dependent on the aforementioned SF'y concept becoming a reality....

Found that Apple mail can be used without an ISP. Doing so involves iCloud, according to Apple, which should know.

How would using iCloud affect privacy?

I hear fastmail, hushmail, gmx & others can be more private, and some offer encryption. Would other emails require use of iCloud?

Apple mail is a generic email client. It can be an interface for ANY email account at any provider. iCloud does not need to be involved in any way.

Just pick an email provider you like, and you can add that account in Mail.

Best not to use your ISP.
Use Apple iCloud.com or ProtonMail https://protonmail.com/

I have almost NEVER used my ISP email. My Gmail and Yahoo mail is so old, its my actual name...
