People carry a variety of bacteria/viral loads that don't cause illness in and for themselves. They have some immunity to it, or the bacteria load is too small to make a difference and is being held in check by other bacteria/virus. The problem is when you get stressed out or catch something more virulent. Your immune system goes down or gets geared against something else, and the baddie that was being held in check now can multiply and make you sick. The same thing can happen when you take antibiotics. They tend to wreck the digestive fauna, throwing the balances out, and then baddies resident in the gut can multiply and cause problems.

It could be a rare occurrence simply because it's normally held in check. The real question for me is not how he got the bacteria, but how the bacteria entered his bloodstream.
