He may be able to physically distance himself, but... he's gotta eat and drink sometime.

He tests for poison and employs food-tasters.
Yep, I figured as much. But it presumes the food tasters are honest.
This make me wonder about all sorts of aspects of hiring for that job position.

How do they advertise it? "Free Food!!!"
What's the job interview like? "Eat these, tell us which one is poison"
Do you have any questions? "Yes, why is this position suddenly open"
Yep, it's probably a job that one does not actually seek, it is thrust upon you. And as implied by your questions above, there is no job security to speak of. :barf:

If you are in a jail cell in the bowels of the Lubyanka Building, you eat what they bring.

The story goes that he's so paranoid that when he travels he brings his own pepper and grinds it, himself.

Hmmm... but the peppercorns have to come from somewhere... is he having his tasters try those too?

Yep, I thought about that too. It could be anything ranging from arsenic to ... polonium. Polonium, that'd be quite a bit of epic justice, wouldn't it?

Is it always the same food taster? If there are two or more, someone could slip in one part of a nerve agent on one meal, second part after a switch.
