It will be endemic in about three weeks, maybe six to ten weeks in low information counties.
It will be endemic when the case numbers range close to a predictable baseline, including variants.
Probably about 2-3 years from now.
(I'd wager that our federal government's policy will start treating it as "endemic" within the next few months. But they'll be wrong.)
The WHO has repeatedly requested that politicians stop using the word "endemic." It just ain't there. It's not under control. At any moment, a new more deadly variant can arise, and given the prevalence of the disease throughout the world there's a real good chance that's gonna happen. If we treat it like it's nearly over, we're going to be that much further behind when the next surge comes.
Even when COVID becomes endemic, that doesn't mean "benign" or "mild." It's likely to kill many more people than influenza every year. The elderly are especially vulnerable. And it seems that health problems from COVID can be greatly exacerbated, not the least of which is diabetes.

It’s hard to strike the perfect balance.
It isn’t only Covid that can kill you, with no notice or warning.
Be sure to still do things you love.

We have pretty much gone back to normal here, Roseville, CA.
Hospital is still full masks. And I've seen 80% masks worn by workers that interact with the public. Like in Jamba the other day. But not the bank. Schools are no mask now as well. Movie theater wasn't required.
Rates here are very very low, and our local is supposedly near 80% one dose vaccinated.

The comments from the crazy were AMAZING. Only it was not the MAGA crazy. It was the absolutist, everyone-should-be-locked-down-until-there-are-no-cases crowd. Just astonishing to me how nasty and aggressive these people are. Their core argument is that many folks are compromised in some way so we should all happily lock down to protect them. For as long as it takes. Their lack of thinking clearly about how the world works--even just getting food into stores--is troubling. But their ability to be nasty is very robust.
I considered myself on that "side" of things. I am surprised at how willing we are to accept 2k deaths a day. My lovely wife and I have yet to go anywhere or eat out. Masks everywhere. I get the sense that MRF is closer to this than MAGAworld.
But this was so extreme that I was stunned.
You could not pay me enough to be a local public official right now.
Those people you mention have been emboldened by this and given credence by the epidemiologists who were essentially making public policy for a time. Those people also don't like the world and are happy to live alone and get everything delivered to their doorstep, and they cannot understand why "everyone" doesn't still do this. You know how the Rs would make fun of the left that they're out of touch and elitist? These people give truth to that stereotype.
My advice is to go and eat at a restaurant, they could use the support. You don't need to stand like a sardine at a bar, just sit at a table just the twoof you.

This is why I will be masking for at least another year or longer...I don't want to get sick.
Do I care if I'm the only one masking? Nope...
NPR had a segment about how people are reluctant to take the mask off yet in spite of mandates being lifted.
I see myself masking at stores and densely packed indoor settings for a long time. I don't care what people thing. They aren't the ones that have to deal with my consequences. They also aren't govomng me any financial support if I become ill.

As I've said several times before, my girlfriend and I are prepared to maskup for the next two years, unless something happens that definitively makes it safe to not.
I don't eat in restaurants, but do order takeaway.
I keep a mask on my ear while on my walks, and don it as I approach or am approaching anybody.
This is a part of our daily routine as much as is putting on clothes to go outdoors.
