Dumb question: doesn't Russia have satellite TV?
#1
I just saw a segment on The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell about a Ukranian who has relatives in Russia. The guy was talking on the phone with his father in Russia and he wouldn't believe his son telling him Russia started a war and is attacking Ukraine. He believes Putin's propaganda. (The guy is continuing to talk to his father and is making progress on getting him to believe the truth.)

Where is the internet? Where is western TV coming over satellite? If they do have satellite TV, I suppose it is different satellites in geosynchronous orbit over Russia.

It’s crazy. They believe what they want to believe.

Just like our Republicans.

Internet service from the outside world has largely been cut off.

Internet within the bounds of the nation is censored heavily.

How many people do you know with satellite TV? A tiny number to start with. Now, how many of them seek out new programming vs watching the same stuff every week? People who watch Faux News will keep watching Faux News. People who watch Russia Today will keep watching Russia Today. It's just not going to make a difference.

One can talk about this without pinning it on a particular political party. There are people in Russia who get their truth from the state. Yes, it seems crazy. Its probably nice to live in such a simple world. Some people get their truth from Tucker Carlson. Is one crazier than the other?

Spending a couple minutes scanning 'street view" of Russian suburbs, there are no dishes on either large apartment buildings or detached homes. Satellite TV is more difficult to get above 52 °N, which is a lot of the country.

The most independent news channel had all the staff walk out and the last thing broadcast was the Swan Lake ballet, the last show before the dissolution of the USSR. Netflix had about 1 million customers, less than 1% of the general population (the upper 1%?).

There’s been a recent crackdown in Russia on Ukraine war reporting by the government. Foreign journalists have been leaving Russia because of new criminal penalties for what the government says is false reporting about the war - which is anything besides what the government says. Independent Russian media outlets have also stopped reporting.

Does DirecTV or Comcast here ever carry a variety of programming from foreign countries? Soap operas on Telemundo or whatever don’t count.
