[The Verge] Is Elon wrong about LiDAR?
#31
You may be right about AI, but I’m not inclined to think so. Even the hands on the wheel solution is fatigue inducing. It would be better to just sit back and relax while the car does the driving, all the while just keeping an eye on things. Can u imagine how much more fatiguing it would be to fly a plane if the pilots were required to keep their hands on the wheel while on autopilot?

AI certainly makes decisions, which can be considered a "judgement". Making sure the driver is attentive is way different than making them keep their hands on the steering wheel. What the Tesla does is just to cover their arse, so if they could figure out something less irritating to cover their arse, that would be good.

I did not realize that Tesla entirely rewrote FSD in 2021 using the Transformer AI approach.

I wonder when FSD will stop being AI-limited?

As for the anti-lawsuit 'keep your hands on the wheel' tech - it's truly awful. Especially if you are driving in construction (which is one of the two seasons in Minnesota!).
