I am about to replace my old graphic Apple airport base station and was wondering if the new one announced today is a good option?
I read reviews saying it may not be much of a speed bump from the old G routers, but mine is an even older B so it would be nice to have the extra connections on the back.
I know folks here are high on Buffalo wireless, is the ease of use pretty close?

the new Airport Extreme just doesn't look like its ready yet. There are a lot of speed problems.
Buffalo? No, the ease of use _IS_NOT_ close to that of the Airports. However, they're extremely reliable, flexible, and give great signal strength.

Just set one up this morning. Super easy. I created a new network with the AP Extreme as the main unit, and then added four AP expresses to handle music and printing needs. The range is far better than the AP express I was using as the main unit. I hooked a USB drive as a file server and am currently playing with the settings (you can add passwords and permissions for guests) I will follow up when I put it through the paces.

total waste of money for you
if you need more ports, buy a $15 100bt ethernet switch

For some reason I was under the impression the Buffalos could be configured with Airport software? Something to do with using a Broadcom chip ... what am I thinking of then?

You could get the old Wireless G Airport Extreme at the Apple Store that is now on clearance for $129. They have had Airport Extreme refurbs for $99, which is a really good deal, but it looks like they are out of stock right now. If you don't need the N capabilities I would get one of those.
