Xerox Phaser 6180 color laser--update
#11
my carts run $300 each CMY and $200 for black, and supposed to get 15,000 prints per cart with 5% coverage. $180 for imaging units, which last 2 X the toner

im lucky if i get 5,000 sheets

So your ink costs per letter size page are around 14 to 15 cents? And the imaging unit only gets you 5000 pages at $180, for 3.6 cents?

I see a total for you of around 18 cents per letter size page. Does that figure right?

How does that compare with inkjet? Is that still about half or less?

Of *course* you've paid 10X the cost of the printer in ink. Pay me now or pay me later, as they say.

You could just buy a $40,000 printer and spend a flat 9 cents or less per page for everything, including maintenance, and that would be a 12x18 page to boot.

Pay me now or pay me later, right? Over 55,000 pages, that would be $44,950, or almost 82 cents/page with hardware and supply/maintenance costs.

Or do a bunch more, say 550,000 pages over the same time, and that $40K printer would give you 17 cent prints taking into account both hardware and supply/maintenance costs.

And if you did everything on 12x18 stock, if you printed all your letter size stuff 2 up, each letter size print is then 9 cents--everything included.

It's all in how you do it.

[quote mattkime]I think elmo is posting his favorable review just to prove that he can be happy with SOMETHING.

So, take notice!
Spoiling for a fight I see.
Are you gonna cry when he decks you one in the kisser?
Maybe you just looking for a quick NutPunch?
It is called leaving people alone, he is posting interesting stuff, why are you trolling for a BeatDown?

i probably should have leased a big copier/printer thing for $200 a month, but hindsight is 20/20...

Hi Guys, this is an excellent discussion which is very informative for me. I can see where a lease would be really more practical for some situations.

I've been running a 7750DN since June of 04, have run about 108K full pages so far. We actually produce spec sheets, trifold brochures, heavy card prints and small runs of various collateral with it. We've been real happy with this Xerox so far which replaced an HP8550N.

Cost has not been a concern here but rather having the ability to produce very small (25+/-) runs in house to support sales and marketing has made it worhwhile according to our management.

Can't say I've done any cost analysis but elmo's figures above are very helpful.

More details on the IQ, please- Other than the cost per page stuff, how do the the best images you've gotten out of the 6180 compare w/the same one printed from an ink jet? Pretty close, or still a far cry?

Is this new Phaser 's photo quality is noticeably improved over previous mdls?

I wouldn't say FAR cry, but it's plain that an inkjet will give smoother prints. On the other hand, I would happily hand prints from this printer to my wife, and she would be ecstatic at having something to frame or give out to friends and family so easily and quickly. There'd be no shame with these prints.

It's kinda like being married. Yeah, you probably coulda done better, right? But at what cost? Is what you have plenty good enough? (I know, for some people the answer is an unqualified "no"...)

You'll probably end up having a 6+ ink photo inkjet in your stable for those prints that have to be absolutely great, but then you'll also use something like this when you don't want to pay that price for the best because you don't need the best.

From what i can tell, yes. But it's important to use the ICC profile correctly, and make sure you're using the Enhanced print quality mode. Without that, the photo prints aren't worth it as photo prints.

Again, I was amazed at what came out of Preview--yeah, *that* Preview--when I installed the ColorSync profile and used the ColorSync utility to attach it to my print driver.

I'll play around with it some more.
