I didn't actually bring up the aero car part, as maybe about 5 of know what they are. Almost everyone has seen a picture of a wing car.
You ever see any of the Malibu Aeros made around '84? Their foray into the GM midsize musclecar revival (they also had a Monte Carlo SS with a HO 305), alongside the GN/T-Types, the 442 and I think Pontiac had something too.

[quote Racer X][quote M A V I C]NASCAR: Build a car from the ground up to be somewhat fast.
If they used stock cars, or built them to actually perform very highly, I'd care about it.
it is sad, because originally they used stock cars, and just built them up. Eventually they came up with the rule that at least 500 cars of a type must be made, and sold to the public for a special edition to qualify. That is where the wing cars came from. Now, the only thing that even vaguely resembles a stock component is the logo.
Well, originally they raced cars driven/souped up by bootleggers
Yeah, I wish they would either return to their roots or give up. NASCAR is going downhill anyway...

Downhill, how ?
It's a bigger business now than it's ever been.
Everything changes.
The current challenges seem to be piquing some people's interest.

the problem is that it is a business, and not a sport. If they all paid a $10,000 entrance fee, and the winner got the purse, and they didn't accept sponsors, then that is wildly different.
That is why I pretty much hate and ignore pro sports.

But they are losing the hardcore NASCAR fan in the process. Restrictor plates, Too many cookie cutter 1.5 mile tracks, now the clonemobile C.O.T... and don't even start me on the lucky dog.
When newbie fans go on to the next big sport, NASCAR will be hurting and realize they alienated the true fans by dumping short tracks and making everything boringly equal.
of course, I want them to do one race on a dirt track - now that would be fun.

If the stands are full and TV viewing statistics are way up, why is nostalgia an issue ?
We've lost all our Civil War Vets, too.
I can watch Formula One and Touring racing for more minutes than Stock, anyway.

Huh?
Why NASCAR ratings are down
Dale Earnhardt Jr. said NASCAR's declining television ratings...
NASCAR dealing with decline in fans, ratings
...NASCAR seems to be hitting a speed bump. With TV ratings and attendance down, NASCAR made a number of moves in an attempt to keep the Nextel Cup Series running full-throttle.
Shootout ratings spiraling
Feb 13, 2007
NASCAR's downward spiral continued Saturday night among television viewers for the Bud Shootout all-star race.
Can ESPN get Nextel Cup ratings out of reverse?
The viewership numbers were down at 30 of the 33 races last year...
There are countless other articles about NASCAR going downhill.

Never dumb down for the masses!
Yep, remember the GM aero attempt, they put on some plastic crap skirts and made the rear roofline flow instead of the formal cutoff. If you own one now, try to find the back glass, near impossible. My buddy Danny owned two Monte Carlo SS's, and the Pontiac version, all had horrible electrical problems, in one summer alone, 4 starters, 6 alternators, and 6 ECU's that was on ONE Monte Carlo!
The alternators caused the ECU's to fry, and if he was driving at night, it would fry every light that was on.
To this day, he will only drive GM's, love him like a brother, but he is dumber than a post! Thank the lords he was born rich!
