Using Time Machine with a laptop?

I'm curious if anyone out there is using Time Machine with a laptop. I'd like to use Time Machine but I don't want to carry a drive around. however, it would be nice to have the benefits while at work.

I am wondering if you couldn't partition your drive and use the partition as a Time Machine backup.

I use it with my MacBook and an external drive. If you aren't connected to the Time Machine drive, It doesn't give you any warnings or error boxes, it just doesn't back up.

I'm using time machine on my laptop at work.

There is a little catching up to do when I plug in at work in the morning but so far it's been working well.

A partiton of the laptop drive would work also. but the drives are not very large in laptops i don't feel it would be a good use of time machine.

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose? If the drive fails, your backup is gone too.

Probably so. I just couldn't think of any other way to use Time Machine without using an external drive.

Time machine doesn't necessarily come into play just for catastrophic loss. It can also be for retrieving files that were thrown away or roll back to a file version prior to modifying it.

I would think that the lightning bolt strike of 'digital convergence' here would be web storage as the Time Machine backup drive, and omnipresent Internet via wifi or Cell network type access. Having your data and knowing it's ALWAYS safe would be most comforting.

I use backup to my .Mac account for a lot of stuff. It would be most awesome if it would work with Time Machine....

Time Machine is working fine on a 500gb Acomdata external drive with an iMac and Laptop. It backs up every hour for the iMac and whenever I connect the Macbook Pro. So far so good.
