I ordered a WD 500GB FW/USB2 external HD from Dell ($133 + 20% PayPal discount) to go with the new refurb iMac since my old external backup drive (80GB) wasn't cutting it.
I've got about 90GB of data currently (250GB hard drive in the iMac, yay silent upgrade...).
My question: Leave the whole ridiculous amount for time machine, or partition the drive in two -- one for Time Machine, one for a clone made via CCC?

I don't think that Time Machine has been out long enough to really make an assessment.

I wouldn't even bother partitioning. Time machine will use however much is needed and then the rest is the rest.

That sounds like a pretty good deal. Can you share any info / link about it? I'm not seeing it on Dell.com.

If you're not installing an OS on the drive, then I wouldn't bother partitioning it. Even then I'd only put a rescue partition on it.
A number of people have commented on splitting an HD, and eventually finding one partition ending up too small.
I think TM has been out long enough for many people to really know it's behavior. It just that I'm not one of them. Me, I'm waiting for a book by Ihnatko, Breen, or Pogue.
