Whatever else you read, be sure to check out http://www.fundalarm.com/ (free). They keep close tabs on pretty much all the funds around. Info you're not likely to get elsewhere.

You can see how your prospective (and later, existing) funds rate for safety and return. There's also a discussion area. I haven't been to that in a long time, but it's worth a visit to see who else has the same questions you might.
