Slingbox and Airport (Wireless, not airplane)
#1
Hey there,

Quick question(s) regarding Macs and Slingbox.

I am a traveling consultant and miss my expensive cable I am paying for back in Chicago, thus, I think a slingbox is a great choice, as I can watch in both on laptop and smart phone. The issue lies in the fact that my Comcast Cable modem is tied directly into my Airport Express (hooked into my stereo). I do not have any "extra" ethernet ports for the Slingbox to connect into. So my options are:

1. Upgrade to an Airport Extreme and just use one of the ports there. OR
2. Buy a wired router/hub, connect that to my cable modem and then just plug my Airport Express into that.

Any ideas? The Extreme is probably the best way to go, but just checking. Any have trouble with accessing their Slingbox outside their network from Comcast internet?

Thanks.

You'll need to set your router to open a port for the slingbox. its not that hard but can be confusing the first time.

(of course, there are cheaper routers than the airport extreme but you probably already knew that)

But has anyone had problems with Comcast Cable Internet and a Slingbox?

I don't to have this great setup, only to be able to watch it while inside my network.

I use my SlingBoxes on Comcast all the time--I watched a recorded San Jose Sharks game last night remotely. The upload speed is usually just under 300K and that is fine but not great.
Routers are so cheap these days--that is the way to go....but stick to name brands since the tech support might be needed for set up...I would stick with the models used on the SlingMedia support page, since they have it step by step there (usually just works).
Some Slingers have had trouble opening the correct port on Airport extremes...and in this case you wouldn't gain any advantage with the extreme for you Slinging.

We do Slingbox off of a dish connection through a Linksys router. No problems here.

FYI Sling Media has a recommended list of routers here http://support.slingmedia.com/get/KB-005028.html
