Traveling to Kauai, could use some info

Frank, does that mean tunnels is a no-go in january? I've stayed up there twice but never this time of year. Thanks.

Yeah, what Frank said.

It's a bit of a drive to get up to Kokee, but the Kalalau Valley is stunning. Too bad the road to Polihale is closed -- that spot feels like the end of the world in some ways, isolated and wild. I'd love to camp there some time.

One other thing we did that we really enjoyed was rent a kayak and take it up the Hanalei River. Very peaceful and decent exercise, too.

Kokee is great hiking, smells wonderful, many different tress.

Not being able to get to Barking Sands is a drag.

Late Dec and Jan Kauai is noted for some extremely rainy weather me thinks.

Beerman,
Swimming at Tunnels is something you should ask the lifeguards at Haena Beach Park about. You will probably have to park there anyway and walk back to Tunnels as the parking is very limited in the vicinity. The wave faces yesterday were 30 feet, the largest waves the Hanalei firemen have ever seen. Waves were breaking over the Hanalei Pier and the parking lot at Black Pot Beach. They expect conditions to improve over the next few days but swimming on the north shore is not recommended. Better to be safe.

You should check out Na Aina Kai botanical/sculpture gardens in Kilauea (I'm a volunteer docent there) and also the Kilauea Lighthouse when you are up that way. Another interesting site to visit is the Hindu Monastery in Wailua. They have a free tour once a week. You have to call to find out which day:

Aloha,
Frank

The main thing is there is a lot to love about Kauai....

The outer Islands are where the real Hawaii is.... Kauai is beautiful...

Watch out for the roosters!

I remember the roosters from...10 years ago? Wow, it's been awhile. That's one reason I switched to the north shore. Sounds like I should be glad I'm staying on the south this time though considering the weather.
