I always thought Alton's was a custom paint job. And he's probably got one of the higher-up models (e.g. one with a more powerful motor), though the Artisan should have plenty of horsepower for the average home chef.

The refurb Kitchenaid Blenders on Amazon are spectacular deals. They do drip a little bit out the bottom in heavy use, but a quick wipe and you're good to go. I've got a whole office making smoothies (with ice) with the one I bought, nearly 18 months old, and as good as new.

We found ours at Linens-n-things. We lucked out on ours. We always wanted one and ran across a Professional 600 Series that somebody had returned. Knowing their warranty was one year free replacement we bought it. It was marked way down for open box and then We had one of those coupons for 25 % off at the time. We ended up paying around $225. We are very happy with it.

darn, we paid $220 for a black one as a Xmas gift to one of our good friends only to find out later that she already has an exact one! Now we are returning the gift.
