Is it ok to give out a mac's serial number?
#1
I'm trying to sell my Mac Mini on CL, and one guy wants the serial number so he can look up the specs.

Is that information ok to give out?

I've never had a problem giving it out. I'll even put it in my e-bay add. It's not like someone can steal it and embed it into their mac....at least I don't think so. Kind of like the VIN on your car - people like to have it to run a carfax report.

He wants to check it against a stolen Mac database.

Yeah, it's fine. They can't get any personal info from it... at least not easily unless they work for Apple. I always post a screen shot of Apple's warranty check which includes the serial# in my auctions. It instills more confidence in bidders. If the circumstances were opposite I'd insist on a serial before I bid or bought.
