Mail.app is freaking out and trying to re-download 4000+ messages
#1
It got through about 200 before I stopped it. Looks like it is starting about a year ago and going backwards in time, re-dowloading duplicates of messages that are in my Mail.app inbox. I quit mail, re launched, and got the same behavior.

The server is the yahoo pop server, smtp.mail.yahoo.com. This seemed to come out of nowhere...I didn't change any mail.app preferences, haven't changed any settings on the yahoo side.

Any suggestions on stopping the madness?? I suppose I can just let it have its fun and then delete them.

Go to Yahoo webmail and delete all the old ones from there.

That happens to me with Yahoo POP using Entourage as well. I now have 3-4 copies of duplicates on older messages because of this.

Think its a problem on the Yahoo side so the client gets confused.

As a result and due to faster searching, I've mostly given up on email client use with Yahoo and have switched to using their newer web mail.

Really wish Yahoo implemented IMAP, but I've been using Gmail much more so because of that.

Had the same problem using POP to upload all the email from my old work address before it was deleted. Had about 5,000 on the server, duped enough to end up with about 8,500 in total. At least with them sorted by date or sender it is relatively easy to eliminate the dupes.

well at least I know its not just me. I'd rather not delete the messages on the server. I like to have them there when I don't have my laptop with me.

Did the same thing to me yesterday and today. Same thing seems to happen about every 4-5 months. I don't use Yahoo; I have a mailbox at webstrikesolutions that's forwarded to gmail and mail.app retrieves the messages.

I don't keep any old unread messages in my Inbox, so I can always sort by the "unread" bullet column and delete the dupes, but it's annoying and mysterious.

I believe that POP client software will only download mail that is in the "In" box on the server. Log into web mail and move it to another folder, that should effectively stop your POP client from downloading it, but it will still be on the server if you need it.

Great idea DewGuy. Thanks. I've been using the yahoo web interface today because I just didn't want to deal.

I get the same thing every so often (sometime mostly often). It seems to be a problem with my ISP (not Yahoo). When I notice it begins downloading old messages, I stop it. I right-click the inbox, select Get Info, select the Account. After all the emails show up, I would select and delete the "duplicate" emails.
