G4 1.25 MDD to white 20" iMac refurb-- impressions
#1
So, I guess I've fallen into that camp that treats the tax refund check as free money.
Decided I should grap a white iMac before they're gone, and go all Intel.
There are still a few left.
So, here are my impressions so far.

-unpacking and setting up-- beautiful piece of technology, the coolest thing I've owed (sorry, cooler than a BMB). Scandalously bad packing job-- remote, CDs, and mouse were literally bouncing around the box. Keyboard lost the space-bar-- popped it back on but it's not quite right. One of the OS CD's was actually half out of its sleeve.
Shipped with 10.4.8 restore CDs and a special "drop-in" Leopard upgrade disk (will only upgrade 10.4).

-migrating-- PITA I won't go into, but nothing went right. Still digging out.

-Useability-- things that were boggy before are snappy now. Had lots of beachballs with T-bird (a buggy app)-- no more. Web surfing is perceptably snappier (using Firefox like before). I don't often do a lot of heavy crunching, but Illustrator and Photoshop still seem to take their time loading. Classic is loading much faster (just kidding).

-Display-- previously I had a dual setup with an Acer 20.6" widescreen on the bottom and a Staples 19" on top-- due to the inflexibility of the Acer's stand and the way my desk is set up I had to put the iMac on top of the Acer; it's now painful to look at the Acer after looking at the iMac's display. Been playing with settings to no avail. Hence my previous thread of who makes the iMac's dislplay-- got to have one at least as good for the second monitor. Unfortunately it seems all of the similar displays out there have been discontinued, except for maybe a 23" Apple Cinema Display which is out of my price range.

Some pics to follow.

What you see when you open the refurb box-- accessories sitting in flimsy cardboard tray-

(edit-- some of the accessories, anyways . . .)

Final resting place of remote and restore CDs:

In situ . . .

thats the strangest monitor setup i have ever seen?

that packaging does suck, nothing like the new box

maybe you could mount the acer on a monitor arm?

or just get a different desk...

I haven't bought a white 20" iMac refurb, so I don't have direct experience with the packaging on those guys. I have bought 24" white and alumimum iMac refurbs that were not quite packed as exactingly as the brand new units, but not nearly as slipshod as yours was.

Yeah, time for you to buy a new desk!

I picked up a 24" white refurb last week and had a similarly crappy packing job with remote, dvds, booklets and the like all rattling around in there. Keyboard didn't manage to lose it's spacebar, though. Also didn't take to the 10.5.2 combo update at first - had to go 10.5.1 then do the 10.5.2 even though shouldn't've had to... oh well. Much better now. Congrats!

Well, your desktop is cleaner than mine. I am still using a 1gHz MDD. we just moved and I have yet to find a place for the iMac. Its the last of the 17" PPC

That's because I piled all the crap here:

Sorting it was a project for Saturday.

And then Sunday. And then Monday . . . etc.
