I am on my second newertech USB universal drive adapter doohickey from our sponsor. the first i returned b/c I thought it was broken. now the second one doesn't work either. so could it be something i am doing wrong? Its got power. Funny thing is the drive doesn't even power on UNTIL I UNPLUG the sata cable. Then it powers up, spins up, but never appears on the desktop or disk utility (after plugging in the sata cable of course). Drive is a known quantity. Works perfect in an external case.

All these things are a little funky.
Are you connecting through a hub or directly to a port on your computer?

I've never had repeated luck with mine. It seems to like my 500GB Seagates but it pretty much hates any older IDE drive I have thrown at it. DVD drives seem to work ok.

Nature of the beast I think. I tend to do okay with the two I own. Except, the first one's power supply burnt up in about a month or so. Still need to contact OWC/Newer for an RMA. Should still be under warranty. The adapter itself still works, but without external power, only for 2.5" IDE drives.
Do you follow the directions to the last details when connecting the drives? I echo Black Landlord's question.

I don't like hubs. Its connected directly to the built in USB port on the macpro.
I got it to work btw. after unplugging and replugging just about all the plugs i finally got the "sata" light to come on on the little doodad and the drive finally mounted. I guess they need to include "jiggle the cord" in their troubleshooting section.

I have two of these also. Neither work with 2.5 inch drives. They sometimes work with 3.5 inch units with the power supply hooked up. I wish there was one like this with firewire.
