I see the Apple refurb store has 4GB iPod nanos for $99, both the current (wide) and previous (narrow) generations. Is there a reason someone would want the older generation, without video? Small hands? Compatible with an older version of iTunes that gives some long-lost feature? I just don't get why they're priced the same. [edit: OK, I guess you can get colored old nanos for $99 while the colored new nanos are $149, but that doesn't explain the old silver model price.]

It's always like this with refurbs. There's some odd formula relating to the original price rather than "real" value.
At the same price, the current gen is a no-brainer (I've always found the 2nd gen ugly).

Not sure the cost is justified, but gen1 and gen2 nanos fit certain docking systems better than gen3 nanos.
Unless you have one of those setups, I would go with gen3 - the screen is nicer.

Interesting-- I've found the dock connector and headphone jack have the same relationship to each-other in G1 and G3, but not G2.

The G3 has a recessed headphone jack similar to the iPhone. A lot of standard headphones won't fit in it unless you shave away some of the headphone's housing. This was the case with my Shure headphones.
As mentioned the screen on the G3 is more vivid and easier to read + can do video which is good for short Vodcasts. I couldn't watch a movie on it.

The issue is distance between the clickwheel and the bottom of the ipod. The taller ipods work better in some docks than the shorter, 3G iPods.
As for the spacing between the dock connector and the headphone jack, yes, the 3G is like the 1G ipods.
