Robocops and robbers

John Milius' 1984 actioneer "Red Dawn" and Paul Verhoeven's classic 1987 sci-fi feature "Robocop" might be remade says The Hollywood Reporter.

At a press event in Cannes on Saturday, MGM toppers Harry Sloan and Mary Parent confirmed that both features are being looked at as serious candidates for remakes.

The original "Red Dawn" posited a slight different end to the Cold War with Russia and Cuba invading the US, and followed a group of guerilla resistance fighters (Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson, Powers Boothe) in a small Colorado town. It was the first film released to be rated PG-13, and at one time held the record for being the most violent film ever made.

"Robocop" was set in a crime-ridden near-future Detroit where the police force has been privatized and a police officer, slain by a burtal gang leader, is resurrected in cyborg form to fight crime and corruption.

The pair also acknowledged the bad buzz surrounding "Valkyrie" but says that the final film "will speak for itself."

I loved the original Robocop, but it is ready to be remade? Isnt there like a a certain amount of years that have to pass before we start pulling out?

Granted I would prbably love a remake, but I dont think its time. Hmm...maybe they'll remake Bill & Ted also.

Geezo, Red Dawn perfectly captured the small town uncertainty with the advent of Peristroika and then Glasnost, and a war-game textbook example of a Soviet invasion of the good old USA. Any 'remake' would have to find a different bugbaboo to 'invade' small town USA. And it would be sooo forced.

And I'm not talking 'Invasion USA". That "terrorist army" was so wimpy it fell to just Chuck Norris and a few boots to the head.

Maybe "V". The occupying invasion from space is a possibility.

From a historical-cold-war outlook perspective, Red Dawn was pretty damn good!

I think any attempt to "remake" it would be a MISERABLE failure...
The only "enemy" I can think of that might be plot-useful would be China, and that would not be believable (China has no real Air and Sea Lift capacity, whereas the Soviet Union did).

RoboCop COULD be remade, but the original is such a classic, I don't think a remake would be well recieved either.

Geez... what are they NOT remaking? Whats next?
Raiders of the Lost Ark?
Star Wars?
Jaws?
Blade Runner?
Alien?
Debbie Does Dallas? (it would probably be NC-17 now... but they wouldn't be able to find performers with that much pubic hair any more...).

They have to use Red Foreman as Clarence Boddicker again. No one else would do.

The "Plot Keywords" in that listing are pretty funny.

Funny. I can never remember Kurtwood Smith's name so I always refer to him as either Red Foreman or Clarence Boddicker.
