Linksys WRT54GC Router Firmware Update Problem
#1
I have a Linksys WRT54GC Wireless Broadband Router. It has worked fine since I bought it. Several months ago, my son's MacBook started dropping the connection on a regular basis for 10 - 15 seconds before he is able to reconnect. (No one else is having any problems even though they are using crappy Belkin USB wireless adapters!)

I went to the Genius Bar at the local Apple Store and they told me I need to update the firmware on the router. I downloaded the Zip file. When I un-Zip it, I get a folder with a text file and a disk image file (.img). When I double click on the disk image file, I get an error message which says: Not recognized.

I downloaded the Zip file in both FireFox and Safari to see if that makes a difference. When I called Linksys, they said it should be a .bin file. Is Stuffit Expander causing the file to be labeled wrong?

I don't want to trash this router by using the wrong file to update the firmware.

Any suggestions? (Linksys basically said they can't help with a Mac!)

You don't need to do anything with the .img file. You go to the admin page on the router and go through the update procedure and select that file, upload it, and install the firmware update. Make sure that you're connected using a wire because the wireless connection will go down during the update. If there is a problem you'll need to connected using a hardline.

I wondered about that but the ever so helpful Linksys people said it was supposed to be a .bin file!

I'll give it a shot.

Thanks,

If it is supposed to be a bin file then either the Linksys people are wrong, you have the wrong firmware update, or they screwed up the firmware. If it needs to be a BIN file then it simple won't work. It won't damage anything by trying. It just won't work. I suspect that the IMG file will work though.
