[quote vision63]It's just another way to play movies right?
No. It's the only way to play BluRay movies, which are a higher resolution than regular DVD movies. You can also play regular DVD's on a BluRay player.

No. It's the only way to play BluRay movies, which are a higher resolution than regular DVD movies. You can also play regular DVD's on a BluRay player. I'm watching the movie "Waitress" on my MacBook Pro right now and I cannot imagine the picture being any better. Is it really?

The resolution of a DVD is only 720x480, versus BluRay which is 1920x1080.
That is a huge difference, and since the screen resolution of the Mac Book Pro is 1680x1050 (or more if you have the optional 17" 1920x1200 display) you would see an improvement. So on your Mac, the DVD is actually being up-converted to fill the screen. Of course if you're happy with normal DVD's then don't worry about it.

If good enough is good enough, don't bother with Bluray.
But for others, good enough isn't. It's an investment and some people don't want to start again. Can't blame them. But after watching a lot of 720 HD torrents, SD DVDs don't look all that good to me. And if one has a *big* screen, the difference is obvious.

I'm gonna download a couple of 720 HD torrents.

vision,
I watch them on 23 and 24" displays from about 2-2.5' and I can easily see the difference. I don't have a smaller screen to try, without jumping through some hoops. If possible, find something that you have the DVD for. *If* you don't see the difference at first, watch the 720 torrent for a long while, then try the DVD.

Lack of analog outputs is a valid reason. In my case, so is lack of support for DVD-A and the fact that it is made by Sony (with which I have had bad luck), but these would not be universal.
