Palm Treo 650 quick question

Picked it up from Craigslist but with no manual so I've been just going thru menus to see what happens. Got a lot figured out by going to Verizon's website and checking the online manual but that doesn't cover all. So, after messing with stuff, I have a blinking "star" or "asterisk" in the upper left corner that wasn't there when I got the phone. Anyone know?

I see that when I've pushed the * key while dialing. Might also be a reminder that you have a message or voice mail.

click the star--it means that you had some sort of "missed activity" like a missed call or new voicemail or some sort of alert.

It did cross our minds but mine is Verizon and his is AT&T! BTW, if anyone is still checking this post, what exactly is a SIM card for?
