Not only a "sound trouncing" but some serious psychological help. There is plenty of evidence that sociopaths (like serial killers) start out as kids who torture/kill animals.

Since I'm a fan of reptiles, this story was particularly disturbing to me.

Too bad they can't just feed the kid to the crocs.
