what's the purpose of the equalizer in iTunes?
#1
The thread below about the distortion in iTunes brought up an old question I always wanted to ask but never did.

What's the purpose of the preset equalizer setting in iTunes? Don't you think the recording studios use much better equipment and have already applied the correct equalizer curve for each CD?

Are you saying that each recording studio should come to my hours/car/boat and set up my equipment to match theirs?
COOL!!

No.

Make your OWN presets. That's fine.

But the "factory" presets, from Apple, what are those for? they don't match your equipment, do they?

Initially, it can be assumed that iTunes would be used on the computer, therefore, typically "dinky" speakers. The equalized has two main purposes... 1) to help offset the inadequacies of your speaker system, and 2) tailor the sound to your specific preferences.

I happen to have a hearing deficiency in the high end spectrum and I set my equalizer to help compensate for that. I am glad that I have that option.

yes, but then you want to enhance the high end spectrum for ALL types of music, no only for certain types, right?

Generally speaking that would be true.

But MY musical tastes don't vary much. I can see where different types of music might require different reinforcement based on personal tastes.
