SS, I was wanting to ask someone who bought one why they did.

A buddy asked me which one he should buy, with the Amazon rebates, the Intel iMac is fairly cheap, factor in the very cheap RAM upgrade compared to the G5 ($180 vs $350), and finally the lightning speed of the CoreDuo chip, why buy the G5?

The only upgrade I plan is the added gig of memory.

I bought this machine in November, so the Intel machines were not out yet. But all of my software is PowerPC. My daughter uses it; it replaced a PM6100 with a G3 card (!!). It has been rock solid; no bleeding edge. And it serves as a great backup for my PMac.

Now, my son is headed off to UTexas this Fall. He will end up with an Intel iMac, which will be best for him, especially if it every gets to a dual boot capability.

I just bought a 20" iMac G5 w/2.1 GHz. I've had it a couple of weeks now.

I chose the G5 over the Intel iMac because:

- Cheaper. I got mine for $1350 shipped, no tax from Amazon.

- I use Adobe CS2 which will likely not be updated to Universal Binary until early next year.

- I wanted to get a nice speed increase over the single processor G4 I was using but didn't feel shelling out big bucks for a PowerMac made sense at this time. The iMac G5 is a cost-effective solution for me until the Intel PowerMacs come out and the Adobe applications are updated.

- Quirks. The Intel iMac has some minor quirks with certain apps and peripherials. Nothing major but I'm a freelancer and need my stuff working now or I don't get paid.

BGR must be quoting ram from Apple. Ram at OWC is cheaper for the G5:

OWC brand $97.95 1 gb for the G5 while the Intel is $114.99

Samsung brand is $147.99 for The G5 and $179 for the Intel.

I just received a PowerMac 20" iMac G5 on Friday. I chose it over the Intel Mac because I still use a lot of software that is not Universal and won't be soon. I'd rather not be first in line.
