On further reflection, there's almost no chance you would have anything resembling normal performance if that was coming from the hard drive.
No disk in the optical drive. It reads CDs fine.
MBP is a 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, model, made in Dec06. Stock except for additional 2 GB RAM (total 4).
Guess I'll run Disk Utility and see what that uncovers.
