How does eating skew a blood test?
#11
I do blood tests all day..... I am sure that the doctor wont have you repeat it. It all depends what was wrong with you son, and what the test was. BMP Basic Metabolic Panel, Glucose, BUN for Kidney FUnction), Creatinine FOr Kidney FUnction, Na , K+, Cl-, CO2, Calcium.

We all know Bananas have Potassium K+, but like I said, the doctor just wants to make sure that these screening tests don't scream out something abnormal.

Good luck

"thanks, Robert. i did just find some info that one is pre-diabetic if your glucose is higher than normal. if the banana elevated his reading, it still wasn't high enough to be pre-diabetic so i think we're okay."

I agree. I would call a nurse and tell her, though. She will probably say what you surmise is true. Be aware that diet-sodas can mess with your glucose tests if drunk while you're supposed to be fasting. If he does have pre-diabetes or is even suspected of "pre"-pre-diabetes, he had better buckle down and stop it. Eat right and lose weight if he needs to. It is a very serious disease.

Can't completely agree with this - in that I would encourage anyone to eat healthily and exercise, regardless.

Being diagnosed pre-diabetic was probably one of the better things that happened to me. After being forced to examine my diet, and having the motivation to get regular (daily) cardio exercise, I can honestly say that I'm in the best shape I've ever been in, and definitely like the results. It really was just a side-effect of following doctor's orders, but I'm not complaining...

I may be mistaken, but I think this is routine screening because he's in a group with a higher rate of developing type 2 diabetes.

I meant eat right. Not eat right if he needs to. Lose weight if he needs to. I didn't say NOT to exercise.

I didn't mean to be so unclear in my sentence structure.

Exact same situation here, came down to a choice of start treating it with drugs or make it go away through diet and exercise so I got serious about it and lost 35 pounds in 4 months through a lot of exercise (rowing 45 minutes a day 7 days a week) and watching what I eat, needed to get 3 holes punched in my belt, and had two sets of blood tests during that time confirming that I was out of the borderline range and back to normal. Still need to continue this to get back to my college or maybe high school weight and then try to maintain it.

Depending on how thorough the tests were (endocrine inclusive) - various enzymes would be way off from
the banana - which is another reason fasting is preferred.

In particular, amylase - a primary marker for tests involving pancreatic function - as this is the first
to attack (via saliva initially) starches and convert them to successively smaller molecules of sugars.
Ultimately it ends up as serum glucose or stored as glycogen.

I can go into more detail if you find a "donor." Just PM me and I'll head down your way and we'll hack that
sucker up and show ya how the process works while they're still alive. Home-schoolin' don't get much
better than that!!
