MacBook Air Hinge Repair $696=Good Experience at Apple Store
#1
I came across a forum discussion this week about MacBook Air (Rev A) hinges.

Seems the hinges are prone to break, after they become loose. My MBA hinges had not broken, but they were loose. The computer worked fine, and the loose hinges were, if anything, a minor annoyance.

I took it to the Apple Store on Wednesday, and was told that it should be repaired, but they would need to order the part, which is the whole display clamshell. They called on Friday, and said the part was in stock. I took the MBA in at 4:30, and was told to expect a 3 to 5 day turnaround. When I got home at 10:30 pm, I found a message from them at 8:58 pm, letting me know that the repair was complete. A 4 1/2 hour turnaround.

I popped into the Apple Store this morning, and got my MBA back with a shiny new display. The Display Clamshell is $561, and the labor $135, for a total of $696. The good news is that, even though I purchased the MBA in February of 2008, and do not have it covered with Applecare, Apple extended the warranty for this problem, so I paid $0 for the replacement and repair.

No arguments from the Apple Store people, and a quick repair. I'm the first to bitch when I feel I'm getting screwed, but my hats off to Apple on this one.

I've always heard buy Applecare for laptops .... I never have, and I never have needed it. However, I have received multiple beyond-one-year repairs (the iBook screen failure, MacBook chipping and discoloration) for free. ... generally, I guy a laptop every year or so anyway so Applecare isn't a priority for me, but I can't imagine the thousands of dollars I'd have spent had I gotten Applecare on every Mac I've ever purchased ....

Thanks for the post!

My Air's hinges are loose. I didn't buy it new so I thought that was how they were made. I'll have to look into the repair aspect.
