I'm thinking about getting a Wii for our family. However, I'm curious about any impending updates or a new version coming out this Fall. I cannot access any of the Wii-rumor sites from work, though.
any Wii update rumors?

The basic Wii package was updated recently. Now includes Wii Sports Resort and MotionPlus. Haven't heard anything about actual hardware updates. I'm guessing the recently announced 3DS is the first priority. Maybe new Wii hardware next year?

Every statement that I've read from Nintendo exec's has been to the effect that they are very happy with the current product and have no plans to update it any time in the near future.
What they have updated and may continue to change are color (there's a black option) and price. The old retail price was $199 for the console, Wii Sports, one remote and one nunchuck. The $199 package should now include the Motion Plus controller and Wii Sports Resort on top of the rest. Otherwise, it should be priced around $150. ... Nintendo is definitely working on a successor to the Wii, but I doubt their projected release will be before 2013. I think that even a 2014 update is probably not going to happen. (I'm referring to a major overhaul of the system, not a change to the amount of memory or to the network-adapter or some other minor component.) IMHO, there's probably going to be quite a bit of market-pressure to upgrade the Wii by mid-to-late 2012. While it's still the number one console every quarter, sales are slowing and supposedly the new 3DS handheld system has a graphics chip that's twice as fast as the one in the Wii. I doubt that the grumblings from their customers will spur them to accelerate the development of the next-gen console, tho. |
