AP report: "With statehood, Palestine ready to end all claims"
#1
RAMALLAH, West Bank – The Palestinians are ready to end all historic claims against Israel once they establish their state in the lands Israel occupied in the 1967 Mideast War, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Sunday, addressing a long-standing Israeli demand.

In an interview with Israel TV, Abbas also said negotiations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remain his preferred choice, but that he will consider other options if talks break down over Israel's continued settlement expansion.

Maybe... maybe... probably not... but, maybe...

So they are saying if they are given back the lands captured in 1967, there will be peace? Uhhhh, no. Won't happen.

What does Iran say?

I suspect the most hard line elements in their society will demand that all of Israel be given back to them, the same way many Jews after WWII would settle for nothing less than getting their ancient homeland back.

You are one sentence away from what Ahmadinejad is asking from Israel.

Unfortunately there is no single "Palestinian Government". As a result there is no way that negotiations can succeed. The "Palestinians" as being used as a proxy by Iran, Syria, etc... The only way to gain lasting peace is for all the countries in the region to sign on to a central agreement.

That's why the Camp David accords were so important- they got Egypt and Jordan to sign on as peacemakers, removing a good chunk of the military power facing Israel.

I expect Iran is going to be the hardest sell. Syria... well, military dictatorships can 'change their minds' very easily, so that's going to be a toughie as well.
