It often takes something like the box concept to get people to realize you can't block intersections or cross walks.
I have often wondered (cursed even) why more cities and counties do not employ the NYC design of pavement markings to delineate the box. But, I suspect it's because it costs money for the paint or thermo and they don't want to put it in the annual budget.

probably because they see how effective it is in nyc. painting the lines does little to enforce them.

have you traveled to other cities with large intersections that are not marked? it's complete gridlock. at least last time I was in NYC, people didn't *completely* block the box; typically there were some that were on the far side of it when the light changed.
