Can DSL peak above advertised speeds?

those of us with AT&T's DSL in this and surrounding neighborhoods don't have modems, but instead a 2nd phone line run to the house just for DSL. My router plugs right into it and performs the PPPoE itself. Very cool.

Cool isn't the first word that comes to mind for that kludge. :comp:

If a customer were to instead get a combined modem+router from their ISP the effect would be the same I guess, minus the diagnostics GGD mentioned, and the ability to only need 1 phone line and associated number.

But I like the freedom to pick any router I want and not need an extra box from the ISP. Listen, I'm the guy that never was interested in digital cable TV or pay-per-view partly (OK, mostly) because I didn't want the clutter and extra complexity of cable boxes tethered to each TV.

You (as in most customers not living in your neighborhood) can get just a DSL modem, not a modem/router combo, and then pick your own router and use only one phone line.

Ethernet directly to the house.

Upon initial installation many years ago they used a 2nd physical line to the demarcation box outside. Still just 4 conductors, a regular POTS cable, but 10baseT capability is more than enough for what they planned.

So that meant Internet availability in just one room, where the line was, until I re-routed the line to a central location and inserted a common router, first a Macsense, then various Baffalos etc. No modem built-in.

Really curious about how they are doing this, you'd need 4 wires (two twisted pairs) from the demark box to the room using Ethernet. And where and what is on the Telco's side of the wire, given the 100 meter segment limit of Ethernet. Much shorter than DSL's distance limits.

I just don't understand how they could make Ethernet reliable over a long distance using what was intended to be phone wiring with an unknown numbers of splices.
