Looking for a good dishwasher - any models to suggest/avoid?

Whatever not-quite-the-cheapest Kenmore that Sears had on sale the last time we needed one has worked fine for us for eight years so far.

isn't there a hack-in-wash site where you can piece it all together and run OS X on it?

I'm at Home Depot currently. The Maytags have stickers on them that say, "Better Built with American Pride" FWIW. I forget who the other brands are within that same Maytag group but would expect parts to be similar. They have a white one for $400. There's an Amana for $250 also, "Built with American Pride" if that matters. Not sure about the "pride" but at these prices they're disposable.

Our Maytag is about 10 years old. It's not noisy but went through 2 or 3 periods when it got so noisy I thought it was going to explode. And then it would fix itself. Paid about $350; a neighbor found the same one on Craigslist for $100.

Look real close because that's the new way of saying American made when Mexico is actually located in
the continent of North America. I'm also seeing designed or engineered in America but in fine print it's
made somewhere else.

Two five-year old Bosch washers in my house. Never had a problem.
Both work well and are quiet as a mouse. They do have a heating element to dry dishes, but it can be turned off to save on energy. Has a sanitizing mode. We use the quick wash mode, takes about 15 minutes.

I Googled it and many sites say they don't have drying elements in a Bosch but their website lists some
of their models that have a concealed element. I don't know if it's for drying or for super heating the water.

Product group: Dishwasher
SKU: SHX43P15UC
Installation Type: Built-under
Panel ready: Not possible
Tub material: Stainless steel
Concealed heating element: Yes

We had a Maytag that was highly rated the year we bought it, but it was recalled about 3 years ago. We replaced it with a KitchenAid - and have been satisfied.

Regardless of what brand you pick, make sure that your glasses and dishes fit the racks in an efficient manner. Some aren't well designed and you wind up with a lot of wasted space.
