Need help with using mail.app with my own domain's email
#1
Hi there everyone, how's it going. I am hoping someone can help me with an email issue I am having.

Although my ISP is cox and I have an email address through them, I recently purchased a domain name from godaddy. My intent there was to switch to a new email address that is linked to that domain, so I can have one non-changing email address for life, as long as I renew my domain every year. I prefer that concept to having an address that depends on a free email service staying free, a company staying in business, etc.

Godaddy offers you one free email account with any domain mame you purchase. I set that up and it sends and recieves fine through their webmail interface. However when I set it up with mail.app as a POP account, I am getting an error message that "The connection to the server "mail.danielsteinberg.com" on port 80 timed out.

I called up godaddy and the guy was willing to try and help, and he verified that all my settings were correct in mail.app's preferences. But, in the end he could not figure it out with me. He said that xo might be blocking the port we're trying to use to get to godaddy's email server, and only wants me to use cox's email server (apparently fairly common). We tried changing to port 25 and 3535 but mail.app keeps trying to use port 80.

Any ideas here? I know people do this all the time, use email addresses attached to their own domain, and they must be going through some sort of ISP to do it. What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me, I really appreciate it!

POP (for outgoing) uses port 110. This is the default. If you set the account up and don't change the preferences, you should be OK.
