I HOPE this isn't what apple is up to, but to restore from a time machine backup should only require the time machine drive and your computer's original restore DVD (as long as it's 10.5 or later)
but there is no way in hell this is an image ONLY thing - LOTS and LOTS of people still do not have broadband or easy access to an applestore.

You guys are all wrong.
It's really quite simple-- hold down the "T" key while starting up the iCloud.

When you download from the App Store, BUT BEFORE you install, you use Disk Utility to make a dmg file. You burn that file to DVD or put it on an external drive. You now have your dmg installer for backup.
As far as I can tell, you can't do this with the app store. The app store doesn't expose the .dmg file for you to burn. I could be wrong, but everything was automatically installed from app store for the apps I've downloaded.

Wouldn't a clone of a bootable back up from an external drive onto a new replacement drive, suffice to get you back to where you were?
