very few take me seriously...
Bingo! I have seen so much of that in my college friends who majored in Psych. and Sociology.

I just can't understand these murder-suicides with children as victims.
I mean it's sad that the guy was going through rough times and saw no way out for himself, but why the bleep does he have to kill his innocent children?
As a parent, every time I read a story like this, it brings tears to my eyes for the kids.

My first thought-- it's often said that people go into helping professions to help themself.
you know I have heard that too. One of the contestants on last season's biggest loser, or maybe one of the Extreme Makeovers-weight loss edition this season is a personal life coach.

That's an interesting outlook. Did you learn that in school or through experience?

I would say both...I should also point out that we *all* have crap to deal with.. Those entering the helping professions just tend to have it more at the forefront and it is brightly illuminated by the work they do every day.
I think it also should be stated that, to my knowledge, there is no regulating / licensing body for "life coaches". Of the ones I know, many of them are folks that either never went through a degree / training program, flushed out of one, or after getting licensed, have been disciplined by their governing board and decided to just do the life coach thing instead.
all that to say, this guy may of just had a psychotic break / depression with psychosis / been just plain crazy.
EDIT: a review of the CA BBS and board of psychology indicates that he has never been registered as an intern or licensee.

I've had a number of master teachers who despite their brilliance, had big issues. I have always observed/felt that they were masters due to their ability to see the world, see through it, and get us to see it too, but not able to filter the information for themselves personally.
Some were mostly harmless. One was dangerous and I needed to step away.

Every girl I dated that was a psych major was nuts.
A man walks into a psychiatrist's office wearing only underwear made of Saran Wrap.
The psychiatrist says, "Well...I can clearly see your nuts."
